What limits how many panels can connect to one inverter?

Answer

The limits are the inverter's permitted DC power, voltage, current, number of inputs or trackers, and string operating range. The panel count must be arranged so cold-weather open-circuit voltage and hot-weather operating voltage, as well as current and power, remain within the inverter's stated limits.

Key points

  • Panels are usually connected in series strings to reach a usable voltage, while parallel strings increase current.
  • The maximum series-panel count is constrained especially by the highest expected cold-weather voltage.
  • The number of parallel strings is constrained by input current and tracker limits.
  • Total panel wattage must remain within the inverter's allowed DC input design, even if clipping is intentionally accepted.

What it depends on

  • Panel open-circuit voltage, operating voltage, and current
  • Expected minimum and maximum site temperatures
  • Inverter voltage, current, power, and tracker limits
  • String configuration and cable layout

Risks and trade-offs

  • Exceeding voltage or current limits can create safety, equipment, and warranty risks.
  • Too few panels in a string may prevent the inverter from operating efficiently or at all.
  • A design that is valid at one temperature may exceed voltage limits at another.

Information you may need

  • Panel and inverter electrical datasheets
  • Site temperature range
