How many panels can connect to one string inverter input?

Answer

There is no universal panel count. The number is limited by the inverter's voltage and current ranges, the panels' electrical characteristics, temperature effects, and the allowable string and input configuration. A qualified design must calculate the string rather than count panels by rule of thumb.

Key points

  • Panel open-circuit voltage must remain within the inverter's maximum voltage under the relevant cold condition.
  • Operating voltage must stay within the inverter's tracking range.
  • String and input current must remain within the inverter and wiring limits.
  • Panels in a string should generally have compatible electrical characteristics and similar operating conditions.

What it depends on

  • Panel voltage, current, and temperature-coefficient specifications
  • Inverter maximum voltage, current, and tracking range
  • Expected temperature range
  • String grouping and roof orientation

Risks and trade-offs

  • Too many panels can exceed voltage limits and damage equipment or create a safety hazard.
  • Too few panels can fall outside the inverter's operating range and reduce performance.
  • Mixing mismatched panels or roof conditions can cause avoidable losses.
