Path-Q Solar
Should battery size be based on my average daily use or my highest-use days?
Answer
Usually neither alone. Size the battery around the service objective—such as routine evening shifting, essential outage coverage, or a specified high-use event—and test average, seasonal, and high-use days separately. Designing for the highest day can be costly if that event is rare.
Key points
- Average use helps estimate routine cycling and utilization.
- High-use days reveal required energy and power for the desired coverage target.
- Outage backup may require different sizing from bill savings or daily load shifting.
What it depends on
- Primary purpose of the battery
- Frequency and duration of high-use events
- Critical loads and desired outage duration
- Solar recharge availability and reserve settings
Risks and trade-offs
- Average-day sizing may fail during unusual demand or outages.
- Highest-day sizing may increase cost and reduce utilization during normal operation.
Information you may need
- Typical and high-use interval profiles
- Target backup duration or shifting window
- Critical-load list and battery operating limits
