Path-Q Solar
How can I tell whether a solar quote includes enough inverter capacity for future expansion?
Answer
Ask the installer to state the inverter's maximum DC input, AC output, voltage and current limits, current connected panel capacity, and the capacity reserved for future additions. A quote does not provide meaningful expansion capacity merely because the inverter has a larger nameplate rating; the proposed future panels must also fit its electrical and control limits.
Key points
- Check both DC input capacity and AC output or interconnection capacity.
- Confirm whether the inverter supports the proposed future panel electrical characteristics and system architecture.
- Ask whether expansion would require additional equipment, rewiring, new approvals, or a separate inverter.
- Get any promised expansion capability documented rather than relying on a verbal statement.
What it depends on
- Inverter model and manufacturer expansion limits
- Current panel count, orientation, and electrical specifications
- Electrical-service and interconnection capacity
- Expected size and timing of the future expansion
Risks and trade-offs
- A larger inverter may add cost or operate less efficiently at low output.
- Future panels may be incompatible with the original equipment even when spare power capacity exists.
- Equipment warranties and monitoring systems may impose additional limits.
Information you may need
- Complete equipment schedule and single-line diagram
- Inverter data sheet and proposed DC-to-AC sizing
- Written description of reserved capacity
- Expected future panel type, quantity, and location
Your next step
What to do next
Request a written expansion-capacity calculation from the installer and have it reviewed against the inverter manufacturer's specifications.
