Path-Q Solar
How can I tell whether a north-facing roof is suitable for solar in my hemisphere?
Answer
A north-facing roof is not automatically unsuitable: in the Northern Hemisphere it generally receives less favorable solar exposure than a south-facing roof, while in the Southern Hemisphere the comparison is generally reversed. It may still work if the roof has useful sun exposure, adequate pitch and area, limited shading, and acceptable economics. The correct test is a site-specific production estimate rather than orientation alone.
Key points
- The sun's path, roof pitch, shading, and local climate determine the effect of orientation.
- A low-pitch roof or a roof near the equator may have a smaller orientation penalty than a steep roof at higher latitude.
- Panels can sometimes be placed on multiple roof planes or adjusted with mounting, subject to structure, appearance, wind, and cost constraints.
- Compare expected annual production and self-consumption with alternative roof areas.
What it depends on
- Hemisphere, latitude, roof azimuth, and pitch
- Seasonal shading and obstructions
- Usable area and possible panel layout
- Electricity use and the value of the production
Risks and trade-offs
- Rejecting the roof solely because it faces north or accepting it without modeling can both lead to poor decisions.
- Tilting or reorienting panels may increase structural loads, visibility, or cost.
- Using a less favorable roof plane may require more panels or reduce expected output.
- A production estimate may not reflect future shade or roof changes.
Information you may need
- Roof orientation and pitch for each usable roof plane
- Location, shading profile, and obstruction information
- Roof dimensions and structural constraints
- Annual production estimates for each feasible layout
Your next step
What to do next
Ask for a site-specific comparison of the north-facing layout against other roof planes, including annual production, assumptions, and added mounting costs.
