Path-Q Solar
Can I use solar before final grid approval if the panels are already installed?
Answer
Usually not for a grid-connected system unless the utility and applicable authorities expressly authorize operation. Panels being installed does not establish permission to energize or export; an approved off-grid or properly isolated backup configuration is a different case.
Key points
- Permission to operate is distinct from physical installation and inspection.
- A battery-backup system may still need approved isolation and operating controls.
- The installer should explain whether any limited testing is allowed and who may perform it.
- The utility's written authorization controls the grid-parallel operating question.
What it depends on
- Utility interconnection rules
- Permit and inspection status
- System architecture and isolation controls
- Permission-to-operate conditions
Risks and trade-offs
- Unauthorized energization can create safety, compliance, warranty, or insurance problems.
- Testing or commissioning may require qualified personnel and specific procedures.
- Waiting for approval can delay savings but avoids potentially serious operating risks.
Information you may need
- Written utility operating authorization
- Inspection and permit status
- Whether the system has approved islanding or off-grid capability
- Installer's commissioning procedure
Your next step
What to do next
Ask the utility and installer in writing whether any operation is permitted before final approval and do not energize the grid-connected system without documented authorization.
