Path-Q Solar
Can a solar battery provide backup while the grid is intentionally shut off for safety?
Answer
It can only do so if the complete system is designed and approved to operate in islanded backup mode, with equipment that safely disconnects from the grid and supports the intended loads and duration. A normal grid-tied solar system must not continue energizing a shut-off grid.
Key points
- The system needs a safe isolation or transfer function and a compatible battery inverter or backup controller.
- Solar charging during the grid-off period depends on system design, controls, battery state, and operating conditions.
- The backup circuits may be limited rather than the entire property.
- The installer must verify operation for the specific type of intentional outage and restoration sequence.
What it depends on
- Battery and inverter operating capability
- Backup-panel and islanding design
- Utility and electrical approval requirements
- Critical-load power and duration
Risks and trade-offs
- An incompatible system may shut down or create a serious electrical safety hazard.
- Backup capacity can be reduced by low initial charge or insufficient solar generation.
- Intentional safety shutoffs may have different operating conditions from ordinary outages.
Information you may need
- Exact battery, inverter, and backup-controller models
- System one-line diagram and backup operating description
- Required load and duration
- Utility, code, and emergency-operating requirements
Your next step
What to do next
Ask a qualified installer to confirm in writing that the proposed equipment supports the intended intentional grid-off scenario and to obtain the required utility or authority approval.
